A healthy, vibrant aquarium starts with the right foundation – and that’s where Tetra ActiveSubstrate comes in. Thanks to its innovative clay structure, this specialised substrate promotes consistent water circulation and offers up to 50% more water permeability than traditional gravel. This helps to prevent stagnant zones, avoids substrate compaction and protects plant roots from rotting. Even the finest roots are able to anchor quickly and securely within the porous clay, encouraging strong and rapid plant growth. At the same time, the open structure of the substrate supports the colonisation of beneficial bacteria, which not only aid the biological set-up of new aquariums but also help to stabilise water quality in the long term and reduce the strain on the filter. By lowering the organic load, the substrate contributes to clearer water, while the rounded grain shape provides a natural appearance and helps to protect sensitive bottom-dwelling fish from injury. Before use, Tetra ActiveSubstrate should be rinsed thoroughly to remove any dust caused by transportation and to prevent clouding. Then, apply a layer around four centimetres deep evenly across the aquarium floor. For optimal plant nutrition, we recommend using a two to four centimetre layer of Tetra CompleteSubstrate as a base. To maintain healthy and lush plant growth over time, apply Tetra Crypto monthly to nourish the roots and use Tetra PlantaMin regularly to feed the leaves. In heavily planted tanks, the addition of CO2 is also advised – for example, with the Tetra CO2 Optimat Set or Tetra CO2 Plus.
